Peterborough Railway Station, Cambridgeshire

This impressive cross-shaped planter was installed under the cover of darkness to ensure maximum surprise for commuters come Monday morning. And, it definitely did.

Sitting on the site of a former coffee shop, the planter measures a whopping 7m in diameter and is filled with ten tons of soil and compost. The simple planting of rosemary and lavender (provided by the Tandee Nursery) shows off the lovely bug hotel sculpture in the centre, which was the result of a schools’ competition.

This planter was initially funded by London North Eastern Railway (LNER) but continues to be maintained through public donations.
