The garden at Norwood Junction Railway Station had been long forgotten. Grace, one of the station staff, had the idea to transform it into a wellbeing garden.

The nearby South Norwood Community Kitchen, which provides meals for the needy, were invited to join the project and use the garden as a space for growing food.

Network Rail, owners of the land, gave a licence for its use and a grant towards costs. Along with Arriva Rail London, TfL and contractors Carlisle.

We were asked to lead the project and, over the course of three months, the overgrown space was transformed with raised growing beds, a greenhouse, a herbal tea bed, accessible walkways, artwork and notice boards, a wildlife area with pond, hibernaculum, bird boxes and bug hotels. There is furniture made from recycled timber and a summer house, where professional counselling is on offer. The Community Kitchen is using the raised beds for growing food for its meals and food boxes.

Garden opened 25th September 2025.
